Does medroxy progesterone (provera) make you cry? |
Does medroxy progesterone (provera) make you cry? I take 7 pills every 3 months to induce my period and while I'm taking the pills I'm mad, upset, depressed, and I cry alot. What in the world is going on? I am 27 years old and I've been taking it for the past 3 years because I have hard, irregular periods and the provera is to induce my cycle. Oh YES!!! Medroxyprogesterone (Provera) is an artificial progesterone, and it can and does make one depressed. Almost every woman I know who takes it gets super-depressed while taking it. It has to do with its effects on your brain's neurotransmitters--it's a very clear biochemical reaction. You have my sympathies. It's the most commonly prescribed artificial progesterone hormone replacement, though, because it's been around so long. Unfortunately, most types of progestogens have that same side effect. I don't know enough about you to know why you're taking it--hormone replacement is the usual reason--but there are a few alternatives out there that might work. For example, if you used the Mirena IUD, you would get a continuous small dose of artificial progesterone released into your uterus, and very little would get to your brain, so you wouldn't have the depression problem. I'm just curious--are you under 45? It seems from my own observations that younger women tend to have these problems with Provera, but not so much older women. Hi! |
