Has anyone heard of ankylosing spondilitis? It is supposed to be a distant cousin of rheumatoid arthritis.?

Ankylosing spondylitis is similar to Rheumatoid arthritis in that it is an autoimmune disease where your body鈥檚 immune system is attacking the joints and possibly other organs.

It is not unusual for ankylosing spondylitis to begin between the ages of 20 and 30 and sometimes in the teens. It effects about 3 tens of a percent of the population.

Primarily ankylosing spondylitis effects the joints in the spine and where the spine connects to the hip.

The majority of people with ankylosing spondylitis experience mild to moderate flare-ups of inflammation generally alternate with periods of almost no symptoms.

About a third of the people see some discomfort in their eyes due to inflammation but it seldom effects the vision.

For most people ankylosing spondylitis is a manageable condition. Between exercise to strengthen the back muscles and treatments for the inflammation and pain most patients can live a fairly normal life.
