How prevalent is schizophrenia in the homeless?

How many people, given that they are homeless, suffer from schizophrenia?

err thanks, guys! but i was hoping to get statistics. some of you gave them but they weren't what i'm looking for. i'm looking for stats on how many of the homeless suffer mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, not how many schizophrenics are homeless. thanks for the help though! it's greatly appreciated.

Many homeless people wind up that way because they already have a mental illness---including schizophrenia or other psychosis where there is a break from reality.

The can't hold onto jobs---can't pay the bills. Often these individuals have shirked the medical community (psychiatrists--hospitals).

Families are not always available to deal with these individuals psychiatric problems.

Many homeless are those who never received treatment or those who may have been discharged of left a psychiatric hospital.

i have no idea. hopefully not too many. i feel soo sad for the homeless. it breaks my heart to see one without shelter.

Sadly, many homeless people are suffering from some sort of mental illness. One of the diagnostic criteria for many such illnesses is that affects the persons ability to function normally. It becomes a catch 22, because the person may not have the capability to seek the help they need to get assistance that would prevent them from ending up on the street. It is a sad situation, one that we need to overcome as a society.

A NUMBER SUFFER FROM MENTAL ILLNESS, THE REST ADDICTIONS. GIVING MONEY TO THEM HELPS THEM BUY MORE DRUGS AND ALCOHOL.

1% in the population all together
however, if parents and sibling has 12 to 30% depending upon the how both parents or twins

"A new study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry suggests that approximately 20% of the people who are diagnosed with schizophrenia are homeless"
