Anyone with immediate family members with schizophrenia??

Just Curious to know, i have 2 brothers who have it. If you have, are they Male or Female? and how long ago were they diagnosed? Do you have trouble getting them into hospital when having a psychotic episode?

The mental health system in Australia is a joke, trying to get someone into hospital when they are clearly psychotic can be very difficult, im interested to hear what the process is in other countries?

3 days? What if they arnt stabilised with meds yet?

The issue here is that when they are clearly being violent or just going off in general, they get sent home before being hospitalised, due to lack of beds ect.

I have a brother-in-law who has it. When he goes into a psychotic episode we take him to the local emergency room at the hospital. We go through triage, then back to the ER and we register back in the ER. The doctor comes in and checks his vital signs, and then calls for the hospital psychologist to come do an evaluation. The lady or man gets there within an hour or so and does a quick assassment. He has never been turned down. Even when he isn't in a episode but he has other symptoms. She/he signs for him to be admitted into a psychiatric center. He then is taken by ambulance to another city (that is the closest center - we don't have one in our town) He is admitted at that center and he stays there from 7-90 days. Sometimes longer if needed.
It is actually very easy to be put in a psychiatric center in my town. If you go there for depression and tell the DR you feel suicidal you will be put on a 5454 hold in a psychiatric center for an evaluation, against your will even. I have a friend who is bipolar. Sometimes he goes to the ER and acts as though he is suicidal so he will be admitted into psychiatric center with no questions asked.

I live in Tennessee, USA

My daughter 21 has it. She was just diagnosed with it so no episodes so far but im ready for them. She went in to the mental hospital for cutting and hearing voices they keep her for a little less then 3 days. She hated it in there and she tells me she refuses to go back. From what I read on the right meds. its a very treatabule. Hopefuly they get your brothers on the right meds but it can take time

Well hon, I have two brothers with it..One is 45 and the other is 31...it does take a while to dx. and finding the right meds is the other..here in the US if you have an episode..they are kept in the psych ward for three days..then released..that is how it is handle here...

Yes, 1 adult female. She was diagnosed years ago, and medication usually keeps her stable. No problem getting her into a hospital when she needs it; we just take her to the Emergency Room at a nearby hospital specializing in such cases.

There HAVE been problems getting her to go to the hospital.

She is a college graduate, BS-N, and a well-regarded, workinjg RN when stable.

We are in the state of Nebraska, USA.
