What caused the perception schizophrenia was multiple personalities?

What caused the perception by sooo many that multiple personality disorder was schizophrenia??? Where did it come from? I am so sick of people thinking schizophrenia is having multiple personalities. Its so untrue, they鈥檙e both mental disorders, but are totally different.

Schizophrenia = characterized by delusions, and sometimes hallucinations, can also caused disorganized thinking. Recovery is possible with medication, therapy etc., relapses can be common. Onset usually in 15-20 in men, 20-30 in women.

Multiple personality disorder (or dissosiative personality disorder) = highly complex disorder characterized by having multiple personalities that inhabit one person and come out from time to time. For example, one day a thirteen year old girl could become another person but in the same body and then return to being her thirteen year old self.

We believe the reason is that when people learn of someone "hearing voices," it's assumed that the person hears the voices as coming from the outside, as schizophrenics do. Nearly all multiples perceive their voices as coming from within.

Misunderstanding by much of the mental-health community, particularly psychiatrists, has also contributed to a lack of understanding of what multiplicity really is.

A general fear, which led to lack of interest and understanding in that and most other mental illnesses.

People still flip out when they hear the words "mentally ill," like it's some black mark against them instead of a disease, like diabetes or Parkinson's.
