Am i at risk of getting Schizophrenia ?

I have never had any contact with my biological father and i have recently found out that he has died.
His family have informed me that he was ill with negitive Schizophrenia. He was 21 when they started to see the signs amd he was diagnosed about 5 years after. I am very worried this is hereditry and i am gonna get this?
I am not phycotic (although my ex would disagree lol, just a joke ) and have no symptoms that i would concider a prolem.
I can loose my temper but who doesant right? and sometimes feel anxious sometimes but its when iv had a bad day or over tired.
I just need to know if this is something that i need to worry about. I do not no alot about the desease other than it is a brain disfuntion and if you have it ya pretty much classed as a physco. I have not meant this to be offencive to anyone so please do not think i am being rude. I am just very unawear and worried of this desaese. Thankyou

You have an increased risk, but it sounds as though you're fine, lol.

Not really. If you are say 25 you're probably safe.

Schizophrenics hear voices that aren't there. They seem to know they aren't there. There's probably much more to it than that.

My best friend's older sister has it. She still managed to get 2 PHD's and a good job. She's on meds. She lives in N.Y. city and that in itself is a hectic situation. I couldn't do what she's doing and where she's doing it.

it is normal for anyone to be scared of getting any type of illness or disease,so please know you are not alone. What you might want to do is do some research on the internet about schizophrenia to help you better understand it..Not everyone who gets schizphrenia has a relative with it.

Schizophrenia does tend to be passed through genes, but keep in mind that it can also be treated and contained.

In short...worry about something else more important, sweets. Good luck.

You probably aren't at risk of developing Schizo. I would suggest you research it though.. and if you are scared you should see a psychiatrist.

No! In my humble opinion there is no definitive scientific evidence that any of the types of disorders in the schizophrenic spectrum are hereditary. The public understanding of and misinformation on these disorders is abysmal. If you want to find out more about the diseases type "schizophrenia" into yahoo! web search. In the many links that come up wikipedia has a good summary. You do not have to worry about it!

Good luck with your research, good mental health, peace and Love!

Well, I'd suggest some research into the disease. Find out some common symptoms and watch out for them (although it usually doesn't come around until mid-20's for most people). What I do not suggest, however, is to become obsessed about every single thing; don't think every symptom is an indicator and if you've had a small case of a single symptom once and don't freak. As long as you're aware of it and catch it before you degenerate, you'll be fine (if you even get it, which isn't a large probability). Don't worry; you sound mentally healthy to me.

There is a lot on the internet you can read about schizophrenia, that might help put you at ease (I hope!) Take a look at these:

http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publicati...
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/schizop...
www.schizophrenia.ca/files/Rays_of_Hop...

Also, if you do a Google search on schizophrenia there is a lot of information out there...

As has already been said just because your father may have had it doesn't mean you'll get the disorder, and hopefully reading this will put your mind at rest.

The best of luck to you!! Paul.
