Is schizophrenia inheritable? |
I'm only 15 years old and my grandma has schizophrenia and I've been kinda paranoid lately that I'll develop it later on in life. Is being paranoid a sign that I might get it? Im kinda scared and by being paranoid it makes me feel like i might be starting to get it. I know its sounds dumb but it's true. Do i need to worry? Being a little paranoid about a legitimate fear isn't the type of paranoia you need to be concerned about! Yes, it is heritable. Your odds, however, are not that great. So relax and enjoy life. Schiz only happens in 1% of the population. Your grandma's kids had a much higher chance of getting it, and since you didn't say one of your parents has schiz, I'm assuming neither do. That should give ya some perspective. If your mom or dad who had higher odds didn't get it, you in all probability won't either. Well -- I don't think you NEED to worry, because that certainly won't help. It can be inherited, but many people don't get it even if they do have a family history of it. I suggest you talk to the parent who's the child of your grandma about your concerns -- he or she has probably thought about this too, and could offer you reassurance. I think if you realize you're paranoid, you're probably not developing schizophrenia. I hope you can get the reassurance you need. It is not very likely you will get schizophrenia. Yes, schizophrenia can be inherited but unless your parents or your siblings have schizophrenia, your chances of getting it is slim. So do not worry. if you had an identical twin (person with exactly identical genes to yours) who is a schizophrenic, you would have an approximately 50% chance of developing schizophrenia (and 50% of not developing the illness). if you had one parent with schizophrenia, studies show that the probability of developing schizophrenia is around 20%. For a grandparent the probability is even lower. Schizophrenia has genetic ties. However just being paranoid does not mean that you have it. Schizophrenia is a complex disease, one of the only psychiatric diseases that has proven biological origins within the brain. Paranoia is only a fragment of it. Some who suffer from it have hallucinations. If you think you are suffering from a psychiatric illness, please tell your parents or your school's guidance counselor. well depression and stuff is genetic..so there is a chance you could have some issues in life with anxiety, depression, etc..bu try not to worry about it..you are working yourself up b/c you are afraid you may get it..but yes things like that is genetic..i inherited depression and anxiety issues from my parents and other family members.. so yes it is possible yeah you can, usually schiz is developed later on in life anway..and can be inherited. |
