Are there any relations between demons and schizophrenia?? |
I happened to notice that many people who have schizophrenia suffer delusions of the devil, evil creatures, demons, ect. and talk about communicating with demons above everything. The only relation is between a *belief* in demons and schizophrenia. Hallucinations can be very unpleasant and often consist of subjects that may have incited fear in the person before they ever became ill with schizophrenia. In other words, when they were young, before the disease took hold, they may have found the idea of demons, ghouls, goblins, the Devil, etc especially terrifying. So now, when having hallucinations these primal fears come flooding in and populate those hallucinations. With another schizophrenic those hallucinations might be wild snarling animals, or fear of those in uniform (like police officers). But the most common certainly is what you speak of, because for the majority of children, the idea of those things existing, which they learn from church, TV, movies, etc. becomes their most frightening fears. It's so basic and ingrained that when they become ill, these imaginary "creatures" may become the stars of many a hallucination. Back before we knew that schizophrenia was clearly genetically passed on and that anti-psychotics could tame the disease, or at least turn it down to a dull roar, many ancient cultures thought that schizophrenics were possessed. But now that we know more about it, it's sort of humorous to think that an entity as powerful as the Devil or a demon could be quieted by something so mundane as popping a pill. About 90 to 95% of the people who suffer from paranoid schizophrenia (the type with delusions) come from very strict, religous, abusive upbringings. The delusions are thought to take those aspects and roles because religion and demons were such major players in the person's life - and probably the disease was blamed on the devil or demons or not enough faith, etc. This isn't an answer, but this Question seemed to have some knowledgeable answers so here goes. People with schizophrenia may see demons, gods, and other mythical things. They can't determine what is real, and what is not. Also, if they have a dream, they can't always tell if it was a dream, or real. Schizophrenia is a brain disorder. I will say that most of the people I know with schizophrenia seem to be under control with medication. I have a hard time seeing demons controlled by medication. But I am also a Bible-believing Christian and believe demons are real. So, I just do not know. I think that's just what they think they should have delusions about. not all schizophrenics have the same delusions, for example a schizophrenic in a non-western culture wouldn't have delusions on the Christian god and demons. Well, people are imagining things...... of the hundreds of thousands of people with these delusions, you don't think some of them will draw a parallel to one of the most widely discussed topics on earth? The power of suggestion is very strong with these people. Hearing voices and having visions is never normal. Whether that is schizophrenia or not, I don't know. But it is mental illenss. (And it doesn't have to be Satan or other negative things......it can just as easily be God, Jesus, angels, etc) A few people with schizoid delusions halucinate that demons and evil creatures torment them. As a psycholigist I can say most defiently. What was considered "demon possession" in primitive/biblical times is called mental illnease today. We create our own demons through our thinking because we allow negative/depressive emotions to dictate our thoughts. Some are more "paranormal," yet my aunt's was caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, as is my step-children's mother's and grandmother's on thier mother's side of the family. You idiot, I bet you want to burn schizophrenia sufferers at the stake, right? Because they're possessed? Go back to the 14th century. it's a psychiatric disorder, not possesion. Demons generally avoid such relations. I think Jesus suffered from schizophrenia. Yes, absoloutely. I think so. Yes. NO! |
