In schizophrenia, can the individual personalities have separate, private thoughts?

I don't know much about schizophrenia, and nobody I know has it, but for some reason the subject fascinates me.

Can the separate personalities of schizophrenics each have thoughts that the others cannot hear? Can the other personality also take over/control the real person's body by strength of will?

For example, a schizophrenic (he's imaginary; let's call him Tom) has a friend. And his other personality (also imaginary; let's call him George) doesn't like that friend. George decides he'll do something about it and one day, he takes over Tom's body and does something bad to his friend. (Take your pick; spreads a lie about him, steals something from him, and so on.) Is this scenario possible? Is it reasonable to believe that George can even have thoughts Tom doesn't know about because, you know, he's inside of Tom's head?

Ooooohhh! I get it now...thanks for clearing that up, everyone. Schizophrenia and multiple personalities, or Dissociative Identity Disorder, are different. Gotcha. Well, now that we've cleared that up, we can move on.

As pointed out earlier, you are describing dissociative identity disorder, not schizophrenia. For your scenario, it seems that while sometimes one personality (or "alter" as they're called) is aware of other alters, often they are not. I once went to a talk with a woman who had DID, and she said that she would often have gaps in her memory when a different alter would come out. Thus, I'd imagine it would be possible for Tom to have no idea what "George" had been thinking or planning.

You aren't talking about schizophrenia, you are talking about multiple personalities, or Dissociative Identity Disorder.

In your scenario, it's possible that Tom and George don't know about it each other. It would be possible for Tom to think George was spreading rumors. They wouldn't necessarily know each other's thoughts either, because they are separate people, and aren't in each other's heads.

What you are talking about is Dissociative Identity Disorder; not schizophrenia. DID is the disorder that is responsible for multiple personalities. Schizophrenia causes delusions, and visual or auditory hallucinations in some cases (hearing voices), but if someone has multiple personalities, they have DID.

In some rare cases the individual personalities can have separate memories, lives, and thoughts. I have to ask my uncle if he can hear the others personalities thoughts. Hope that helped you.

no offense, but let us straighten out terminology.

people with Multiple Personality disorder have, well, multiple personalities. like Sybil, or Eve.
Schizophrenics don't - which is confusing and tricky because schizophrenic translates as "split mind" which sure sounds like a multiple personality. Check Wikipedia to get basics.

So - first i will answer for MPDs ( knowledge from college classes) and then i'll see if there is any way the questions relate to schizophrenia.

Yes, when there are 2 or more personalities, it is possible for one to do things or say things that the other can not access. ( maybe under hypnosis, but that just confuses it.)
thoughts the other can not hear? absolutely - yes.

"Can the other personality also take over/control the real person's body by strength of will?" i really don't know. there was nothing in my class to suggest yes or no on this.
However, i can tell you i have seen authentic films, and it doesn't lookk like it does in a cartoon.

I am confused about the question about the imaginary schizophrenics. Did you Hypothetical?
But as i understand the question the answer is - i don't know. since people on the outside don't SEE anything different between Tom and George, one is ALWAYS leaving things behind ( words, actions ) that are troublesome to the other. But - is it on purpose? Maybe, maybe not.

One possibly related fascinating point - everything we know about the behavior of an alcoholic in a black-out ( not passed-out) matches what we see and know about Multiple Personalities.

True Schizophrenia
they hear voices, tend to be paranoid
sorry, the questions don't really make sense for schizophrenia.
