Schizophrenia Disorders?

If someone had jsut one symptom of schizophrenia for years, what would it be diagnosed as, Lets say, if the patenit was just hearing voices and experenceing nothing else?

Theres many types of schizophrenia, all cast by their symptoms.

Hearing voices doesn't go hand in hand with the condition, it's mainly something propagated by the film industry in the 1960's.

If all you hear is voices and you have no other symptoms, I'd say you're just delusional, Prozac can fix that right up.

According to the DSM IV (the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders) - you need to have at least two of the symptoms of schizophrenia to be diagnosed as schizophrenic.
While hearing voices is one part of the thought disturbances (i.e. it is an auditory hallucination) one might suffer from (the others being thought insertion & delusions, perhaps of grandeur), there are several others.
These are - disturbances of affect i.e. withdrawal, and innapropriate affect - psycho-motor disturbances such as grimacing, catatonia and standing in awkward looking positions for long periods - and language impairment such as making up strange words or repeating phrases.
Unless any of these other symptoms are present - then it is unlikely to be diagnosed as schizophrenia.
More than likely - some of the other symptoms may be present but they have not been noticed.

Someone like that might end up with a diagnosis of schizophrenia if the voices were of a particular type (running commentary, voices conversing) and it had a big impact on their life. I don't think there is actually any technical diagnosis for someone who experiences only voices and nothing else, tho I am not 100% sure. I have heard of people who have this experience and consider themselves "voice hearers" - might be worth googling.

I think I know the answer but am presently in two minds about it.

who said that ?
