What's my chances of getting schizophrenia?

My moms side of the family has history of mental illness. My aunt has schizophrenia and her dad (my grandad) had depression and he killed himself. But my mom has no mental illness at all. I'm scared because I take after my moms side I look just like her. I even have the same muscle spasms as her and the same spots. My dads family has no history of mental illness what's my chances of getting it?

I don't know statistics. Here's my wife's family's statistics. Her father has paranoid schizophrenia. Her uncle(dad's brother) also schizo committed suicide after holding the police at bay with a shotgun for several hours. My wife has severe schizo-affective disorder with a bi-polar component. Our twelve year old son has already been in an institution once (age eight) and has been on anti-psychotics for half a decade. Early onset symptoms of schizo behaviors. Ain't life pip!

About 10% of people with a schizophrenic parent get the illness.

Neither of your parents has the condition which is encouraging. Just because you take after your mother's side in many aspects doesn't mean you take after her in all.

Stay away from recreational drugs, as many of these can trigger similar conditions in otherwise healthy people.

If you repeatedly notice any of the following you should talk to your doctor. (I assume you are at least teenage - for young children some of the following are quite normal)
Thoughts or voices that are not your own in your head / being able to read other's thoughts
Thoughts being broadcast so that others can hear them
Thoughts going missing (rather than simply getting distracted and losing your train of thought)
Being able to make things happen by thinking about them.
Seeing or hearing things you later realise are unreal.

Well that's open to debate because schizophrenia is still being studied and scientists an doctors aren't for sure if it is genetic or environmental, drug induced, etc. So I would say that based upon that your chance of getting it is as good a chance as anyone else getting it! I did a term paper on it.

75% chance. Schizophrenia is not just hereditary. it could also be due to the environment. if you're in it 24/7 you tend to adapt to everything and you tend to have it too.

u can get it from asking people in yahoo answers.

there is a 50 50 posiblity u my get it u my not
