Why is schizophrenia the most chronic and disabling?

For me schizophreanis isn't that bad, its not suicidal, scary or prevents me form doign everyday stuff, nor does it show it self outwardly.

also if 1% of the population has it does it mean at a school of 2,000 there'd be 20 people with schizophrenia thats not right either?

Sometimes the symptoms of schizophrenia are hard to treat.
I think depression can be pretty chronic and hard to treat as well. Looking out of the eyes of the sufferer, the condition they have can feel most awful.
