What is this? I'm hoping not schizophrenia. Probably not...but..help!?

So, I'll just be sitting somewhere doing schoolwork or just watching television when suddenly I'll start hearing this voice in my head. It's not my thoughts, you know, like, my conscience, but it's a different voice. It makes me think of times when I was a child and kids were mean to me and called me names or when I'd embarrassed myself, and it always makes me want to do something impulsive, like... punch a wall or go spend a bunch of money or get in a fight with my mom or even hurt someone (strangling, punching, stabbing.... it worries me!).

so, uhm... yeah. what would that be diagnosed as? i don't wanna walk into my psychologist's office and be like "i hear voices".

When you look at mental health disorders, they are usually split up into one of two categories: those that involve neurosis and those that involve psychosis. Hearing voices of any kind usually indicate psychosis. These conditions range from a few of the personality disorders to schizophrenia, etc...

I'm not sure with the information provided, what you'd be diagnosed with exactly. I don't know how old you are, but many disorders which cause similar symptoms get worse during young adulthood. (Between ages 18 and 25). Therefore, you may be suffering from early symptoms of a more severe disorder. There's also a possibility your symptoms are a temporary result of stress and growing up.

Only a mental health professional, like your psychologist, can diagnose you. He or she will probably ask you a series of questions to determine what you most likely have. I suggest you take one of these online tests to determine if you have early signs of a personality disorder: http://similarminds.com/cgi-bin/newpd.pl
or:

Don't start worrying just yet. Be honest with your psychologist about your symptoms, and good luck.

Well I'm afraid that is just what you are going to have to do.
Hearing voices in one's head is a sign of schizophrenia and the sooner you have it checked out the better.
You don't need to be concerned, your doctor will refer you to someone you can trust and if you do have schizophrenia, you will be given meds to cope.

Sweetie, it could be, but the only way to find out for sure is to see your psychologist or a psychiatrist. It might not be that. Though it may be scary or embarrassing to admit hearing voices, they are professionals and are only there to help. If it is something like that, there are medications that can help. Some help some people and not others and vice versa (other meds help others), but the doctor should be able to help find the right one, if that is needed. Good luck and hang in there!

I would definitely see a psychiatrist with this. You don't want to be alone with something like this.

It is hard to say whether or not you do have some sort of mental illness, or it may just be trauma issues going to the surface, but you do want to see someone about this.
