Is Schizophrenia a genetically inherited illness, if so is there a way to find out if a person has the gene?

Thanks for your answers

Yes, it is inherited.

However, the Human Genome Project and others like it haven't fully evaluated the genes affecting mental illness yet, so it's impossible to genetically test someone to see if they carry a gene for schizophrenia.

The best thing to do is to look at their personal and family history - if they and/or other members of their family have schizophrenia, then they carry the gene.

Yes it is genetically inherited. Most of the mental illnesses are. What I have been told is that if you have the gene you will have a high than normal chance of getting it but, you won't always. To my knowledge, there is no current test for any of the mental illnesses.

Even if you could find out, it wouldn't matter.

There are certain genes which contribute to developing schizophrenia, but not all people with the gene will develop schizophrenia. It's a combination of personality, genes, environment, and chance.

I don't know but I do know that schizophrenia is not just a single disease. It has many causes for example a severe fever that cause brain damage.
