What's the youngest age someone can have schizophrenia? |
What's the youngest age someone can have schizophrenia? Usually people are diagnosed with schizophrenia in their early 20s, but it can be diagnosed at any age. schz. is actually a physical disease not a mental condition as is commonly thought. it is a progressive deterioration of a section of the brain that can start at any time. it takes a while before the symptoms become noticeable which is why most cases aren't diagnosed until late teens or early twenty's. you will have it for several years and never know it. with the brain imaging now available they are working on methods of earlier detection. comparing m r i images taken over time you can actually see the diseases progression. It can happen in adolescence usually not younger. And it can happen at any time in life but usually shows when a person is young. There are medications, lots of them that completely get rid of the voices and hallucinations putting one in a well state of mind. The key is to be constant with the medications. I can only offer opinion but as the former answers said it usually occurs in the teen years but in some cases it happens in childhood and I suspect in many cases of children with schizophrenia it is either ignored or they are punished for the symptoms. Symptoms usually set in in the 16-25 age-group, but theoretically it can (and does) sometimes start earlier or later. http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/news/... The youngest I have seen was 8 yrs old but there isn't any set age for it. It was thought that it was only happen in early adulthood (18-21) but now we know differently. It doesn't usually effect people until their twenties but can be diagnosed 16+. Before that point they call it something else (I can't remember off the top of my head). I don't think there is a youngest age set. But its usually teens when symptoms start showing. Voice number one says 10, voice two says 20, voices three and four say 12. |
