I have a family member with schizophrenia...HELP!!!?

My aunt is a classic case of paranoid schizophrenia, even though she has not been officially diagnosed. She is delusional, thinks people are poisoning her, thinks things smell like feces, urine, or cigar smoke...she has been ill for so long that she is now incoherent when she speaks, it's not just crazy but it's flat out illogical. She can not hold down a job, my grandparents are supporting her. I'm literally frightened for my life at times. Does anyone know how to get a mentally ill person evaluated against their will? WHAT CAN I DO I NEED TO KNOW!!!

Mad Mac

I'm sorry if I offended you, but I think google and webmd are a decent source of information, and as far as I can see she has a typical case of paranoid schizophrenia. I'm sure you have been able to cope with your illness with the help of medication.....RIGHT?!?! My Aunt does not think she is crazy (every heard the term crazy people don't think they are crazy) and will not seek help willingly. Obviously you are BLINDLY defending her because you share the same "illness" Being bizarre and weird is one thing but accusing me of posioning her coffee and not knowing if she will retaliate is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

I know how you feel, my little sister has it she's 17 and she has to have the injections soon, but she thinks people follow her and stuff, she also laughs at nothing she gets low at times everyone avoids her at college

She has not been diagnosed by a psychiatrist as schizophrenic? Only a qualified medical doctor can diagnose a mental disorder. Are you sure you are not letting your personal dislike of her color your assessment. I am a paranoid schizophrenic who has been able to live a fairly normal life due to the TLC of family, friends, doctors and nurses. Schizophrenics, if she is such, need the same love as anyone else to improve. Schizophrenics are no more violent than so called normal people so you probably have nothing to fear from her. I suggest you treat her fairly with love and respect and suggest to her to bring her problems up to her family GP physician for a recommend. Kindness will bring about amazing results in even the most bizarre individuals.

Your Aunt is not crazy, nor does she have any mental illness. Her situation is the result of spiritual interactions.

Science does not know the cause of schizophrenia, and they certainly do not believe in the supernatural. That does not mean that spirits do not exist.

I would recommend that you read the document at the first link below. See if you see some of the mannerisms discussed in your Aunt. Then present the document to her and see what she thinks. You might be in for a shock.

hey,
you can ask your family doctor next time you visit.
if your in danger like she's holding a knife to you threatening to kill you thinking youre someone else you can call the police or 911.

you can also contact mental institutions that deals with this type of problem and see what they have to say or if they can help.

you can talk to your school's councillior that's a good person to talk to and guarantted to listen and can take action or get ppl aware of the situation.

hope this helps

For force a mentally ill person to be evaluate and be treated can use commitment method in united state. For made a temperay commitment need one psychiatry or two other doctors to sign the paper,If they document in record that this person could harm to herself or other persons(mean suicidal or homicidal). In your case if you feel your aunt's behavior could frighten to your life, you can start to report to local police then they will bring her to local ER and see by appropriate doctors. If they think she is mentally ill and need to be treated they may commite her to hospital.I agree Mad mac,If your ant not be properly diagnosis,Please don't make up your diagnosis.Even she looks to you is psychosis but need to know the real etiology. Many case psychosis could due to organic brain problems such as brain tumor or chronic infection or toxicity. She should seen by a competent doctor. If she don;t like to be said crazy bring her to see a general doctor.
