Risperdal for schizophrenia....? |
Hi. I have schizophrenia, and my psychiatrist is thinking of putting me on a medication called risperdal. I am currently on seroquil and celexa. Has anyone been taking risperdal on here? I would like to know what the side effects are. If you have taken risperdal, please take some time to answer this question. Thank you. Risperdal made me really tired, and I did gain weight on it. It didn't help my bipolar disorder at all. I think risperdal is considered a first line drug for schizophrenia though, and has less side effects than a lot of the drugs. There aren't any drugs for schizophrenia that don't have some serious side effects though - you have to decide which is worse, the schizophrenia or the meds. For that disorder, I imagine the disorder itself is always worse, so the meds are worth it. I think Abilify might be a schizophrenia med too - google that. I didn't get too many side effects from it (but turned out to be allergic). Avoid zyprexa - my brother gained 60 lbs on it in a few months. He lost all the weight when he went off of it, but most people don't. I've been on it for almost two years for psychotic depression. My side effects are as follows: restless limbs, sedation, and weight gain. I may also be developing a movement disorder although my psych isn't sure about that. Overall, it is a good drug and it keeps my psychosis at bay. I was on risperdal for severe anger problems and psychotic depression. It made me tired all the time, like really drowsy and sometimes I was tired but I couldn't get to sleep. I have been using it off and on for the last few years. It works really well. I might have gained a little weight, but the medication works so I guess it is worth it. Instead of Rispirdal, ask about Abilify. You won't feel tired or gain weight and your blood sugar will remain normal. |
