Should I let my sister with schizophrenia live with us?

I have full time job and two very young kids, husband works full time as well.

My sister is in denial about her condition. Someone has to administer meds on daily basis.

What effect it will have on the family and develepment of my kids?

Thank you!

I think that could be too much for you and your family especially since you both work full time.
How difficult is it to get her to take her meds? I have a number of relatives with schizophrenia and the ones that don't like to take their meds can be very very stressful to deal with. Even just trying to get them to take the pills is hard enough and causes arguments and stuff like that but they will skip their doses, spit them out in the toilet, etc and then are erratic/scary when they aren't medicated.
If getting her to take her meds causes tension or arguments I wouldn't let her live with you, too upsetting for the kids and maybe difficult for your marriage too. And it also could be an issue depending on how well the meds work for her- how does she act on a daily basis- would she seem really erratic or 'scary' to the kids? Can she get along with you and your husband?

Also another issue- if this runs in your family you need to make sure your children aren't in a stressful/dangerous/chaotic environment because that can really increase their chances of developing schizophrenia as adults. Thats the reason none of my relatives live with me, it is genetic in our case so my children can't be around the chaos/stress.

Maybe you could find some other places for her to live? Call social services and mental health division for your area, and see if there's any programs to help or places that she can live at?

I know its tough saying no to a sister ; but please for the sake of your children and marriage ; do not let her live with your family . Schizophrenia is the worst mental disease and those who have this terrible [ sickness ] do things and say things who are not in their control and its not their fault ; because for them its true [ EXp like one night you can come back from work and she can tell you that a man force the door and once in house he rape her ; witch of course be totally false ; but in her mind its true ] so imagine the trouble it will cause you and your family > THink twice before accepting her in your home

Tell your sister what you told Yahoo! Answers. Let her know that you can't imagine exposing your children to her mental illness, but will welcome and help her, if she stays on her medicine, and seeks further help from a therapist. If you have to prove your reasoning (behind your fear of her being around your family without medication and therapy,) show her the websites on the subjects...Ask her to check them out, then get back to you.
P.S. You may need the help of another friend or family member, if your sister still remains in denial, after consulting certain websites..

yeah.
depending on the severity...
one of my very good friends just turned 18, is in college, full time job, apartment, girlfriend, good family life, and he has very severe schizophrenia. his worst blackout was when he tried to ill his brother with a shotgun, but ever since then, his meds have worked just fine.

While no one can accurately comment on the future; having her around might be a blessing or a curse. My bottom line recommendation is that if you are unsure of which way to go, then opt for the safer decision and do not have her.

That said, the following documents, concerning the truth behind schizophrenia, might be of help in your decision making process.

Wow, you must feel under great pressure..on one hand I would like to think that I would be there for my family but schizophrenia is such a serious condition and CANNOT be controlled without medication...I think in your position, I would not let her live with me..but I would try very hard to get her help.

I would not even think about it if I had two kids! Plus, it's one thing if she admits she has a problem but it's a totally different thing when she thinks that she is okay!

It would be bad, the influence of what she may do around your kids could likely affect them negatively

don't let her, it will mess up your kids, get her an apartment
