If my mom has Schizophrenia and so does her father, what chance do I have of inheriting it?

When I was four years old, I was taken away from my mom because "she wasn't fit to take care of me." I am 15 years old now and recently was told about what my mom has. I am worried that I may have a chance of getting the disease. She is not the only family member that I have with it. My grandfather on my moms side, my mom, and two aunts on my dads side.

You do have a higher chance then someone with no relatives having it. There are known genetic links to it. However there also seems to be a mechanism that the gene has to be turned on, so even though you probably have around a 50% chance of having the gene, you only have about 20% chance of both having the gene and having it turned on. Also, childhood trauma and stress seems to be one major trigger in turning on the genes for mental illnesses like that, so it may be to your advantage to have been removed from her care if she was that unfit to care for you.

As far as the disease, do not stress over it too much. Just be aware that it is a possibility and watch out for any obvious symptoms. It would be most likely to show up in your early 20s if you would have it. Schizophrenia is very treatable and many people with schizophrenia live very healthy and productive lives despite the illness. It just takes accepting that they have it, and taking the meds that keep symptoms under control. Just see a psychiatrist if you would have any symptoms come up that concern you.

Yes but you won't know you have it until someone tells you. I suggest you consult a doctor and get some psychological tests done to confirm or deny. Unfortunately, even this is not definitive as it may not start to affect you till your late 40's or an event that over-stresses you.

I suggest you be aware of the problem. Research it and keep a diary.Tell any future husband, before you marry, that it is predominant in the family but it does not seem to affect you at this time. If he is a loving person wh can support you then he will understand. Many guys are fairly thick-skinned and can deal with just about anything, if they know about it.

My advice is just from a stranger so you need to get a lot more answers than this to make any sorts of decisions. Grrr!

A lot of mental illnesses are heredity.
Don't worry about it right now. There are so many different treatments available than years ago that if down the road you need help, it will be o.k.

Well, yes and no.

Yes, you do. Very very much so......

0% It is not inherited. For free paper on topic email me.
