What kind of bad effects does Adderall have on a person that has schizophrenia?

I have a friend that has had schizophrenia for a number of years but she was also diagnosed with ADHD two years ago. Since she was diagnosed with ADHD she has been on Adderall. Her psychiatrist switched her to Stratera which has bad side effects on her. She explained that to them and they still refused to switch her back to Adderall. What should she do?

Bad bad BAD! For me, anyway. It really was so bad for me!!!

Adderall is a stimulant. It is highly addictive, and in excessive doses it can cause you to become psychotic. This generally doesn't happen to people who take it as directed, but people who abuse it can act like they are schizophrenic.

Schizophrenia drugs can be pretty hard on your body. I'm not a doctor, but I'd be inclined to say it might be better to just concentrate on dealing with the schizophrenia and just live with the ADHD. ADHD is so much less serious than schizophrenia, and the more different medicines you pile on, the greater chance something will go wrong. Nearly all medicines create extra work for your liver and kidneys, and all will have side effects on some people. Mind you, I'm not Tom Cruise, many of these drugs are well worth the price for many people. I'm not convinced most people's ADHD is serious enough to be worth the risks associated with taking psychoactive medication.
