Is Schizophrenia a chronic illness ?

One of my best friends is schizophrenic. Usually, the onset of the disease is in late adolescence or early adulthood. In my friends case, he had his first schizophrenic break when he was a sophomore in college. In a matter of weeks, he went from being a promising journalism student to being a homeless person with hallucinations of soldiers following him. His demise has been difficult for both he and his family.
