Is Schizophrenia the opposite of Parkinson's Disease in the brain? |
Is Schizophrenia the opposite of Parkinson's Disease in the brain? No. Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis for a mental health condition. Parkinson's is a neuro-muscular disease. Not the same, not the opposite, not related anymore than jelly beans and motorcycles are. new debate on schiz going on . why u say this please? No.......they are both neurological.....but not related in any way! Strictly in the neurobiochemical sense they are opposites. The most effective remedies for schizophrenia are drugs that block dopamine a chemical in the brain.... Pathophysiologically Parkinsons is a deficinecy of Dopamine and Dopamine supplimentation is the treatment. There have been documented instances when dopamine agonists (biochemically similar to parkinsonian drugs) given to treat prolactinomas have caused psychosis like in schizophrenia.... So no they are oposite only at the biochemical level inside the brain. Kind of. It's a very good question and shows that you have a good understanding (maybe more than I can remember) of how the brain works. Parkinson's disease is caused by a deficiency of the dopaminergic neurones in the extrapyramidal zone of the brain's motor cortex while schizophrenia is beleived to be caused by excessive stimulation of dopaminergic neurones in a different part of the brain. It's certainly true that drugs used to treat Parkinson's Disease (PD) can cause side effects simlar to schizophrenia and vice versa. no. you cannot attribute one symptom to one neurotransmitter (dopamine). Dopamine is found in many brain pathways with totaly different and separate functions. parksinons results from selective loss of dopamine neurons in the nigrostriatal brain pathway, a pathway which control muscle movements. Schizophrenia has two basic causes: overactivty in dopamine recptors in the mesolimbic dopamine pathway, a pthway involved in learning and reinforcement, and a loss of cortical tissue particulary around the frontal lobes, which are involved in understanding social rule and planning. |
