Is this schizophrenia?

a girl i like and am friends with told me that she is obsessed with death and that sometimes she feels her body is detached, like if she is lying in bed, with her hand on her leg, she'll feel like the hand belongs to another body, or she'll be lying in bed and feel like her body is somewhere else than where it really is. she feels like the air around her gets tighter or changes somehow. i really like her and want to help her somehow but i don't know how.

This is a Dissociative Disorder called Derealization Disorder. You can help her best by encouraging her to see a psychotherapist-medication can be an adjunctive treatment, but not a major factor in treating this disorder. Dissocuiative disorders are based on coping with stressful and traumatic experiences using the defense mechanism of dissociation. It can be mild or extreme and really requires therapy. It sounds more like depression that schizophrenia to me. If you can, maybe suggest she talk to someone she trusts about it - family, clergy perhaps, maybe a counselor if she's willing to see one. Probably one of the best things you can do for her is tell her you care and you're worried. Hope your friend feels better soon!
I don't think it's schizophrenia. It doesn't sound like it. Maybe it is depression. Try talking to her about seeing a doctor.

it does sound like it could some sort of obsession (OCD) and as a friend maybe you can get her to see a doctor
or to get her parents to take her there
many times once this matter is under control things will be alright

Sounds like severe anxiety. I think it would be best to get her into counseling and perhaps on some medication. There are some very good medications for anxiety and depression.
