How closely related are schizophrenia and Aspergers Syndrome? |
How closely related are schizophrenia and Aspergers Syndrome? I have Asperger's, but I don't have schizophrenia. I disagree with the second poster that Asperger's is an "illness". Both are psychiatric conditions. Schizophrenia is in the psychotic spectrum (typically presents in early adulthood) while Asperger's is a pervasive developmental disorder (typically presents in childhood). They are not related at all. Yes, both are pyschiatric conditions, but have nothing in common. Schizophrenia is a condition that is genetic, where the person suffers delusions, paranoia, and hallucinations. Their thought process becomes unclear. Most schizophrenics can be treated with medications called anti-pyschotics. So may even lead productive lives. Aspergers Syndrome is an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Scientists believe that they are genetic but also have an environmental component. Children/adults with Aspergers do not have hallucinations, delusions, or paranoia. They mostly have inhibitions in socialization and emotion. There is NO medication that help Aspergers Syndrome. So, please do not compare the two. They are completely different illnesses. |
