What is the difference between schizophrenia and psychotic behavior? "Psychotic behavior" or "psychosis" is a general term that describes certain symptoms, mainly delusions and hallucinations, that can occur in a wide variety of illnesses. Schizophrenia is a specific type of psychosis. Schizophrenia is an illness that take's over your entire life.You totally believe things that may not be true.It's a chemical imbalance that you don't have control over. i suffer psychosis.With that you may have the same strong feelings but in the back of your mind you know it's not likely to be true.Even though it still effects your life etc. Schizophrenia is a specific type of psychosis. Its the disease itself, not the behaviors that go along with it. An elderly person in a nursing home can be said to have psychotic behaviors when they are just agitated...schizophrenia deals more with hallucinations, hearing voices....it is a much more specific term. Schizophrenia is a disorder that often manifests itself in psychotic behavior. There are also people who display psychotic behavior who do not have schizophrenia.
