When they say you can get schizophrenia from smoking pot does it mean...?

...You get the same symptoms as schizophrenia only while you're smoking it or does it mean you'll develop it and have it long-term?

Marijuana does not cause schizophrenia, but it can precipitate the onset of schizophrenia in someone who is predisposed to developing the disorder. So can other things, like stress, abuse, etc., but none of these things cause the disease. There's an inherited biological predisposition which can be triggered by different things, drugs are certainly one of the things that can serve as a trigger. It's called the diathesis-stress model of disease development. Source(s): Twin studies illustrate the genetic component in schizophrenia by showing that concordance rates for development of the disease are statistically higher between identical twins than between fraternal twins. The closer the genetics, the closer the likelihood of the same outcome. The lack of 100% concordance demonstrates that there are also environmental factors in addition to genetics.
This is a myth.

It is often misdiagnosed by psychiatrists because a person is admitted to a hospital while they are stoned.

-It can't give you schizophrenia.
well you know smoking pot is illegal right?
so people have to be constantly looking around for a policeman
that's what starts you down the road to schizophrenia my friend. always looking behind you ...scared you might go to jail. paranoia messing with yer brain adding to all this is your now twisted brain on drugs.LOL!
You can not develope schizophrenia from smoking marijuana.
Interesting question....I think it depends on your chemical make-up on whether you develop schizophrenia at all long term or not... There is such a thing as drug induced schizophrenia...You may get better with medication or just by quit smoking the pot...from experience these drugs have long term effects on your memory, feelings, and thoughts....Alot of the side effects while smoking pot are alot like those of schizophrenia...Schizophrenia is caused from a change in chemical make up and Pot can very well alter your chemical make up....Hope this helps
You only get the same symptoms as schizophrenia, and that's only if you react to it that way. Different people react to different medications (illegal or not) in different ways. It is possible that it can change your brian chemistry, like someone who self medicates with alcohol, it is a depressant and makes depression or depressive symptoms worse. A schizophrenic smoking pot will more likely exacerbate his symptoms so they show more. If someone is (continually and perpetually smoking pot), that person will more than likely be diagnosed as schizophrenia or bipolar, especially if (s)he is not willing to admit to the smoking (people have to stay in the hospital for a certain number of days to get a barrage of tests and to be thoroughly evaluated, and sometimes they have to go back to be rediagnosed--I've seen this with bipolar). I have read somewhere that some schizophrenics are more likely to smoke pot because they are distressed about their symptoms and they are self-medicating, so it could be rather the other way around; instead of seeking medical treatment for hallucinations the schizophrenic rather may feel forced to self-medicate. (After all would you want to have that diagnosis or label pinned on you if you don't think you are?)
A study was done in which people checked into a mental hospital with just the symptoms of hearing voices. They were diagnosed and they could not get rid of the diagnosis nor convince the psychiatrists that they did not have these auditory hallucinations and that they were a part of the study. My psychology teacher was telling this one years ago. I think it had something to do with stigmas or how you will be diagnosed with something, anything if you admit yourself into a mental institute with just one symptom that would not necessarily classify you as having a disorder of some sort.
