Is age related to a diagnosis of schizophrenia?

My psychologist said yesterday that I probably would have been diagnosed with schizophrenia had I been to a psychiatrist when I was a teenager. At the time I had strong delusions about things seeing into my mind and my thoughts being broadcast. After a decade, this went into the background for many years and has come back now when I am nearly forty. In many ways my symptoms are stronger now, as I see, hear, sense and fear many things I never did before.

However, my psychologist isn't inclined to suggest a diagnosis of schizophrenia now, because of my age (nearly forty). Also I have lots of insight into my delusions, even though they affect me more strongly than ever before.

Does my psychologist's reasoning make sense to anybody?

find a new psychologist, a proper one should know schizophrenia can affect ANYONE, at any age any life style race social status no matter how healthy poor old or young it will affect anyone at all.

The more common (but these are very loose guide lines) is that males develop it 17-mid 20's and develop it worse than females, females develop it mid 20's - 30's.

MANY people have developed it well past 40, my great aunt has only just developed it in the past few years and she is in her 80's, I was diagnosed with it at age 14 but have had it all through my entire childhood (I had very strong delusions and hallucinations at ages like 7).

It can affect ANYONE at all, even those who are very healthy, if your psychologist is ruling it out due to age then you evidently need to find someone else, they don't sound well educated in this field, find a specialist in schizophrenia, who knows what else your psychologist is wrong about.

Also it is common for people to have few schizophrenic episodes come and go in life, (symptoms must be present for more than 6 months at some stage) but more people have say 4 or so positive episodes through their life it is actually more uncommon for people to have chronic schizophrenia.
Anything is possible with this illness, it is utterly random and baffling the medical field. Find a new psychologist and good luck.
schizophrenia is not age related . It can come from family . I ve been diagnosed for schizophrenia three years ago but I ve been treated . But the best medicine is you . I mean pills do not work too much if you do not make an effort you should control your thoughts and fears . I have used that bullshit pills and they decreased my academic achievement . I do not use them at the moment. I have fears but I can control them . And when you feel stressed you should try some relaxing herbal teas they really worked on me .
I hope you can solve your problem . Do not worry . Time is the solution of every problem . You should wait and try to control your thoughts.
TAKE CARE.
Yes, men tend to devleop schizophrenia between 17-20 years of age, and women develop the illness much later in life, in their early 40's. If you can recognize your delusions and see them for what they are, then you are a very strong person. If you can control them, than this is why your psychologist isn't ready to give you the diagnosis of schizophrenia. However, he/she should still be perscribing anti-psychotics to help you.

Well it is, and it is not because look it it is like this. I have read in books that schizophrenia appears in the teen to early twenties. And rarely affects children, but all people are susceptible to it young, and old.
