Why do people with ADHD, ADD, and schizophrenia have a tendency to use marijuana more?

They really do, it's proven, BUT OTHER THAN AVOIDING EMOTIONS AND BEING HAPPY/HIGH, what else?

I asked that same question since, one of my ADHD afflicted family members has schizophrenia and they do a lot of "self medicating" I was told they are trying to regulate their serotonin levels.

Also it calms them down helps them feel "normal" like when they are not "high" they are "racing" when they are relaxed by the Marijuana or alcohol or other depressant slows them down to a "normal" pace.

I never tried it, I feel it's an excuse to do drugs but, since I never tried I can't judge those who feel it helps. Source(s): Asked a neuro like 10 years ago, they probaly have better information now.
Marijuanna is a psychotropic drug and would give the so called symptoms of these diseases. So if they are hooked on it then they may look like they have this disease since the same affects that you get from marijuanna are often the so called symptoms of these diseases!
My guess would be that marijuana slows down the "freight train" in their head. Marijuana has a mellowing effect.
I'm gonna cop hell for this but in my experience of watching friends take it, the schizophrenia etc tends to rear its ugly head after they have been on it for a while. It is my humble opinion that marijuana can trigger chemical imbalances in people with a predisposition to these diseases, thus leading to their first psychic episode etc.
It has also been theorized that people with mental illnesses have a genetic makeup that increases their likely of having a proneness to substance abuse.
Some people with mental illnesses will "self medicate" with drugs as an escape.
So that's my ideas. I have watched at least two happy healthy people start using marijuana, and become full blown schizophrenics within a few years. One of them was very dear to me. His life is pretty much over now, due to the fact that he can barely put together a coherrent sentence or leave his house, even while on medication.
Whether the drug use triggered the illness, or whether they began using because they already had the disease, I do not know.
But it makes you stop and think doesn't it.
I'm ADD and marijuana gives me the creeps. I get all paranoid and start to think weired things. I think that marijuana is just another way out for people with mental disorder. It's not a ADD or ADHD things, it's the MY LIFE IS F>U>C>K>E>D up thing.
To the person at bottom. WHERE IN THE HELL DO YOU GET OFF IN SAYING THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A.D.D? Are you F>U>C>K>E>D in the head? I bet you got that idea off of reading some type of magazine in the supermarket. I have A.D.D and I can assure you that it's real. Don't just give a stupid opinion and think that others will take you seriously. This B>I>T>C>H is just another dumb chick voicing her stupid a.s.s
