Does a person who is suffering from schizophrenia realize that he or she is ill ?

i guess it depends the extent of the disease. if youre really schizophrenic, i dont think youre well enough to even realize it.
I don't think before 20 yrs. of age, but I am no psichiatrist. don't take my word for it. do you think you have schizofrinia?
From my experience as a RN, no a schizophrenic person does not realize that he/she is being unrealistic with his/her thoughts of feelings. Often, the schizophrenic person is delusional, or suffering from hallucinations.
check out webMD for accurate information
They should and so should everyone else around them since delusions, paranoia, and hearing voices are major diagnostic criteria.
Certainly many are aware they are mentally ill. There are many ranges of schizophrenia, though, and likely (Im not a specialist) many types of achizophrenia the person has completely abnormal perceptions and consequently no conception of themselves beyond a point.
It depends on the patient's insight into the illness and symptoms. It also depends on the severity of the illness. To read more about schizophrenia, go to
