Should people with a mental illness ie schizophrenia be happy they have it?

I am schizophrenic and if someone could wave a wand and cure me I would say no. I find that there is so much stigma attached that I can never say that sometimes I enjoy being delusional and hallucinating ect. I have recently started my own yahoo group (Ill let you find it) devoted to schizophrenics talking about positive experiences from their mental difference.

Is this like being gay? What was once, and still often, treated as a bad thing is now celebrated by gay people.

Or is it like... I can't think of a example that isn't being crazy.

As I am often delusional and think quite differently to a lot of people I was wondering if people think this is weird and if it an appropriate response?

hi i am a retired mental health professional, and have always thought that if i a person is diagnosed with schizophrenia, they should be told, and should educate themselves re guarding their illness. when i used to counsel people with this illness, we would always discuss how to recognize symptoms, who to go to when in trouble, and ways to keep sypmton free. medications were also always discussed. sounds like you have done that all ready and seem o recognize you syptoms, but also realize, from one of your other responces, that from time to time , you still need medications. i do not think you are weird , by enjoying your delusions, and being able to figure out what is real and what is not. i do not think that most people, however enjoy their mental illness , as much as you do, and i think the word that helps, is acceptance, not celebration. i know their are other people like you, who are bright, articulate, and seem to funtion, with their delusions, and halucinations, because they under stand what is going on. i wish you luck in your group, which i do not think is a bad idea, but i feel you are taking on a big responcibility, but feel you are smart enough when to tell another person with schizophrenia, to get professional help. when needed . i also noticed that from your other anser one of your delusions was that you thought you were the creator of the universe, so be carefull with your group as you can not save everyone, that some people are better off with medications, and cannot mange their sypmtoms of schizophrenia with out them and would be better off not accepting their delusions and halucinations. good luck to you, and thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings.
It sounds like a well reasoned out response. I am glad you feel this way about yourself. You sound much more cheerful than some of the depressed people who come on here.
nope.. i dun find it weird.. to me it's just something some people have and somepeople dont.. if u can be happy with whatever u have may it be an illness or something else... congratulations to u ! i think somepeople find it hard to achieve what u have achieve.. so they might find it weird tht u're happy with it.. lol.. something recently happenned to me myself.. i had a really bad hair cut n now i have to live with it.. i know it's nothing compared to ur illness.. but i just wanted to give an example y'know ? p.s. i'm really glad ur happy with ur illness.. sometimes i think it's so much better to be in a delusional state than being in the real world.. real world sucks !
Y don't you discuss among yourself & decide?
I too have schizophrenia. You should not say schizophrenic, because that is labelling. You should say a person with schizophrenia. I so totally know how you are feeling. It is like being gay. I tell nobody. They would not understand anyway.
There's nothing to be happy about when you're sick but it sure makes things easier when you accept it! I think people are always scared of what they don't understand and that's why certain things come with a stigma. Unfortunately mental illness is one of the least understood in medical science and therefore people tend to deal with it like it was tabu. It's a good thing that you started your own support group and i think it's always healthy to be positive about anything in life. A glass is never half empty but half full!! good luck :)
Sure, why not? I'm bipolar and after thinking about it, I wouldn't trade it for being "healthy", even with how miserable I get at times. I like being different, which confuses me to a point, because with my disease different = suicidal without meds. I guess it's all I've known, so I'm used to it and I think I'd miss it.
