Mum is 69, has suffered from paranoid schizophrenia in the past, widowed and not really coping? |
She now lives alone 250 miles away from where I live, my brother is not in contact with us. She is coping but is very lonely, refuses to accept advice, has anyone any suggestions as to how she could come and live on the south coast, pref portsmouth area. She will not have enough money from the sale of her home to buy a property down here. In the past she has gone along with our suggestions and then just gone ahead with whatever she wants to do. would she not have enough money to buy even a small flat? Couldn't she live inland in cheaper area still near you? or could you move up north to be nearer her in the cheaper part of the country? sounds like she's a very headstrong individual - not an easy thing for you to cope with. Does she want to move? Maybe she has friends she doesn't want to leave. Or maybe she's just scared of change. Having her to visit a few times might bring her around to the idea of living near you. What about a mobile home? Or a granny flat built on to your house? both of those would be cheaper options and would allow her some independence - i'd say that would be important. Can you talk to the mental health team in your mums area, perhaps your mums CPN if she has one. A move may appear to be in your mums best interest to you but it might not be. She will know her CPN as well as the area she lives in and a change to a strange area, while she will have you, could cause more problems. What about sheltered housing, either near you or where she lives. She would have her own space but they often have community areas where she could make friends. Speak to Social Services to find out more. All the best to both of you. talk to your doctor about zyprexia. it helped my mother with her mental illness. |
