How can you help someone that shows sings of Schizophrenia, if they say there is nothing wrong with them? |
How can you help someone, if they don't even know they are sick? I have told this person that he is sick, but he refuses to believe me. He believes a microchip is to blame for all the changes that have occurred in his mental health. Why does he choose to believe something so bazaar, instead of considering a chemical imbalance of the brain? Please help with any advice. I care deeply for this person and it is effecting me immensely. How can I make him see the truth? This is indeed a difficult situation. It is difficult for people who have delusions and hallucinations to recognize them as irrational. Only through the use of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy (such as ACT) do these individuals develop a sense of when their delusions are faults. I would contact a local mental health institute or find out who his primary physician is and explain to them the problem. If you find that unhelpful, you might need to find a doctoral level psychologist (ie Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and try to set up a group intervention. Try not to use any dishonesty with your friend/loved one, but I would also not try to argue the legitimacy of his beliefs. If you do, this will likely only lead to him becoming more agitated and possibly him trying to distance himself from you (perhaps incorporating you into his paranoid delusions). If you need to find a psychologist use the resources below. If all else fails you may need to Baker Act him (i.e., involuntarily commit him). This may damage your relationship initially, but in the long run it should benefit everyone involved. Source(s): APA.org click on "Find a Psychologist" Because people like that cannot think rationally. Things that make sense to normal people make no sense to them. And things that normal people know are bazaar make complete sense to them. You cannot make him see the truth. They have a chemical imbalance which will not allow it. You need to get him into a psychiatrist right away. He needs medication. Some schizophrenics can become dangerous over time as their hallucinations can make them do bad things to others or their property or even themselves. I know someone who thought heard voices, so he stole a corvette and they found him on the freeway walking naked with the corvette parked, running several hundred feet away. Instead of aggrevating him by telling him what he sees is not true, get him to a professional. To him, those things are true and there is nothing you can do to make it otherwise. I wish you luck, sweetie! You have already gotten some help full comments, but as a recovering schizophrenic I have a suggestion for you. You want to help him, which is good, but you need for him to trust you if he is going to take your advice. So, therefore my suggestion is to stop trying to convince him that his delusion is not real. He won't believe you at this stage and it is only going to build distrust. You could also try to fight fire with fire and tell him to go to a doctor to discuss the possibility of getting his microchip removed. That may just get him in the door at least. You of course would do the leg work and have a doctor pre selected in the psychiatric field. Just my thoughts. Good luck, there is life after schiz. Because in their mind, they think this is "real" when in fact in our logic its not. I would really read upon it and this devastitating desease, if you can find the book, I never promised you a rose garden, it gives some explaination to how this imbalance works in thier minds. I know this is hard, but you cannot convince him to our logic. Esp when he has "episodes" to where he acts out on these "voices" or hallucinations. If you would like more info on this desease look up the mayoclinic.com online, it will tell you alot about this desease. For most people there is some preventives like the med, risperdol. If hes on this type of med, which most shitzophrenics dont take there meds because they think the govt is trying to poison them. But suport him and encourage him to take his meds and seek the proper help with professional pychologists. |
