Why are jigsaw puzzles good or effective in the rehabilitation of schizophrenia? |
Why are jigsaw puzzles good or effective in the rehabilitation of schizophrenia? Amazing...the number of jokes regarding alternative personalities we schizophrenics are supposed to have. Puzzles teach us forbearance, diligence, how to finish a task once we start it...perseverance, attention to detail, the application of spatial geometry , patience, quiets...at times...the turmoil within, allows us to switch from left brain to right brain leaving the internal censor offline, teaches us the benefits of tasks that allow us to switch from right brain to left and its calming effects, how to focus on a task at the exclusion of any and all external stimuli, dissassociation from the visual and auditory hallucinations that plague us. The only problem with the above is that few institutions utilize these puzzles in this way. They are the institutional version of using tv's to babysit kids by parents who are either incapable or unwilling to be present for their children I took the puzzles and taught myself to do the above better. Did I mention problem solving? It keeps them "busy". Hope this helps. helps them concentrate on 1 thing so that they only have to use 1 "personality" xxx helps them piece thier life together??? diverts their mind to one thing, usually, especially if its one that really gets their attention and peaks their curiosity i've been in a 'unit' 13 years ago & i dont understand this myself. i get stressed easily & i can't think of anything more annoying than bloody mind puzzles, puzzles, & things that a 'nut-nut' is expected to do!!! if you cant do it .....leave it alone innit? Because you can complete them either by yourself or with a 'friend' |
