What does the typical family go through when they have a family member who is experiencing schizophrenia?

Both immediately and over time.

It depends on whether they've got medicine and/or have decided to try for sanity for a while; some can make that conscious effort at points in their illness it seems. Then they are also no fun to be around, as they're pretty "flat" and unemotional and will try to avoid anything which requires thinking about other's feelings, but at least then they are not:

a. beating you, harming others and themselves.
b. threatening to kill people you like, mention, want to spend time with, etc.
c. denying their illness and saying YOU are the ONLY one with the problem.
d. threatening and acting as if they will go through with suicide if you do or don't do certain things.
e. uncanny ability to turn on and off their bad behavior for their extended relatives or others they want to look good for (they try, God bless 'em), but not for you.
f. emotional anguish from their horrifying and/or merely worrisome hallucinations and weird ideation.

More, but that's some of the worst of it.

The family comes to trust the other members more and the sick one gets more and more depressed and accusing. It sucks, especially if they have another problem like epilepsy and they keep switching docs to the ones who don't like to hear from the family what's going on.
TORTURE, TORTURE, TORTURE. So sad.
It's not pretty at first I can tell you that. My brother-in-law had a nervous breakdown and low and be hold he now has mental issues such as schizophrnia only borderline. The first few months were rough, he threatened to kill his wife and kids, would do crazy stuff around the house just nuts, until they got his mix of meds right now he just sits on the couch 90% of the time all doped up but passive. He constantly is just out there it's like he's in a different universe half the time. I feel bad for him he's a good guy and my step-sister has used and abused this man so much he actually has mental issues.
PURE HELL, just try and remember that what you are seeing is a mental illness and behind those actions is still the person that you know and love, I know it's hard to except that someone you love can be mentally ill. Try and make sure they take meds as directed, try to get them to focus on something that they enjoy doing , make sure they don't hurt themselves or put anyone else in danger, Good luck.
The family go through hell. People suffering with Schizpophrenia are often nice one minute and then suddenly through hearing voices act out.

I know a few families where their son would suddenly start strangling them because their voices had told them so.

Living with someone who is so unpredictable is awaful. The families lives are in dager as much as the person who is suffering.

Many families choose to have their child put into care, or an institution as living with them becomes unbearable.
