Will sinusitis come back after a week of medication in antibiotics?

I went to the ENT doctor last week and he told me that i had sinusitis. I was administered with antihistamine and antibiotics for a week. Today is the last day to complete the medication. But i am afraid that the symptoms would come back since i felt i have a mild sensation of mucus/phlegm at the back of my throat.I am worried that i would get a sore throat & that i would have bacterial infection again feeding on the mucus produced by the sinuses now that i have ended taking the antibiotics prescribed by the doctor. I don't want to get sick with sinusitis again bec. i learned that the more frequent sinus infection you get, the more likely is the need for future nasal surgery and i am really scared to have one and also due to financial reasons since it would be pretty expensive. What should i do to prevent it? Should i go back to the doctor. I am feeling a lot better now bec. my cough and colds and other symptoms are gone.Just worried of the mucus dripping at the back of my throat.Thanx

I would give it some time. If sounds like you'll be fine, the mucus will likely go away in a couple of days.

If you're still having yellow-colored mucus 2-3 days after you stop antibiotics or you start feeling worse, call your doctor.

Make sure you drink lots of water and take it easy.

Monday on Oprah, Dr. Oz showed how to use a Netti pot. It's used to run warm salt water through your sinuses. He said it's better than the antibiotic treatments and is great for allergy sufferers! You can get them at the pharmacy or health food stores. Hope this helps you. It sounds gross, but the girl on the show said it felt nice!

I don't think antibiotics are much use for sinusitis. Doctors give them out because they don't know what else to do.
It depends all on why your sinuses are infected. Perhaps they don't drain properly. I use a prescribed nose spray which helps more than AB ever did. Also drinking a lot of water helps to drain them (not sure how that works, but it does).
Breathing in steam may help too.
The mucus dripping at the back of your throat sounds like a good sign rather than a bad one.

I have had sinus problems for 30 plus years and have never had to have nasal surgery so don't worry about that. The only way you might need surgery is if the nasal passages are too narrow and they need to widen the area for better drainage but that is for rare cases only. If a doctor tells you you need surgery, get a second opinion before proceeding.

There are several things that can cause sinus infections. Allergies can cause you have to recurring problems so as soon as you feel something coming on, take some Claritin D for a few days along with about 8 garlic capsules and you may control it before it gets a hold on you. I have sidestepped some sinus and ear infections the last couple of years, once I learned about these. I've always taken antihistamine but didn't know that garlic capsules are a natural antibiotic and easier on the body. You can continue to take garlic capsules every day for the rest of your life if you want to, it isn't going to hurt you.

Drink cranberry juice and avoid other juices for right now. Other juices are higher in sugar and they help feed the bacteria where cranberry juice fights infection. Drink lots of water and herbal tea to keep fluids in your body to help flush out bacteria.

Avoid sugar and yeast and dairy products when you come down with sinus problems, as they only help feed the problem. Milk especially makes for more mucous problems and you will notice you have more phlegm to cough up all the time. Also avoid chocolate because it can also add to the mucous problems.

Anytime you use any antihistamine or anti-inflammatory medications, try to use them sparingly, just enough to get the problem under control. Long term use can eventually cause blood pressure problems and you don't want to deal with that while you are young if you can avoid it. I wasn't aware of that until recently after I studied up more on some of these and other issues.

Sinusitis Treatments Found Ineffective

British study reports Antibiotics and Nasal

Steroids don't lessen Symptoms
Dec. 2007--

Antibiotics and nasal steroids work no better than a placebo in combating sinus infections, a new British study shows.

"Antibiotics are probably not as effective as have been previously believed, particularly for the majority of cases of acute sinusitis," said study author Dr. Ian Williamson, a senior lecturer in primary medical care at the University of Southampton. "

Patients should turn more to symptomatic remedies like analgesics while the body heals itself, usually over a period of three days to three weeks. Topical steroids have little overall effect, but may be beneficial, particularly in milder cases of acute sinusitis."

"For sinusitis, however it is being diagnosed in the primary-care setting, many of these cases do not require treatment, and a more cautious and conservative approach would seem to be warranted," added Dr. Reginald F. Baugh, vice chairman of Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and director of the division of otolaryngology at Scott & White, in Temple, Texas.

But other experts say the study, published in the Dec. 5 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, is no reason to scrap antibiotics altogether in this scenario.
"This is a helpful and useful study, and we shouldn't condemn antibiotics in those people who need them," said Dr. Michael Stewart, chairman of the department of otolaryngology at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center, in New York City.

But, he added, only a minority of sinus infections are bacterial and will respond to antibiotics. The majority are viral infections, which won't respond to antibiotics.

The drainage you are having could just be viral which antibiotics will not take care of. You could give it a few days and see how you are feeling. If the symptoms persist or you develop a fever then you definitely need to contact your ENT. Being on antibiotics too often can cause you to build up a tolerance to them and when you really need them then they may not help. I would continue the antihistamine for now and see how you do over the next couple days.

If the symptoms return, talk to your doctor about getting a culture of the mucous. This will prove (Usually) if it is bacterial or not. Chances are you have a virus or just plain old allergies. More and more studies are showing that antibiotics really don't help with sinus infections. I've had many and I NEVER use antibiotics. Unfortunatly, the majority of the public has been brainwashed into thinking they need an antibiotic for even the slightest ailment when in fact, THEY DON'T. Ever wonder why there is such a big problem with antibiotic resistance now?
