Why does Chronic Sinusitis make people so miserable? |
I was just wondering what it actually does to someone to make them feel so bad? Your sinuses are like small caves inside your skull. When they are infected, the infection will swell the lining inside the sinus cavity, and causes excruitiating pressure and pain. You actually have 2 sets of sinuses, the mastoid and the maxillary, and some people have a third set. Often, all are infected with a chronic infection. You also run a low grade fever, and the drainage down the back of your throat causes a sore throat. It's like a bad head cold that you can't bounce right back from. Because the sinuses do not get a good blood supply, it requires taking antibiotics for at least 3 weeks to fully clear the infection. Sometimes, the antibiotics can make you have an upset tummy, etc., but you need to take them. Often, a family practice doc will only give 7 to 10 days worth. You also have to take a good decongestant and mucous thinner, and no antihistimine, which will dry the mucous and prevent it from draining.Lots of warm liquids help.
