Sinusitis or not?

My primary doctor ordered a CT scan for possible Chronic Sinusitis which I had done. She then called me and said I had Chronic Sinusitis. I just had my appt w/ an ENT doctor and he looked at my CT scan results and said that I don't have sinusitis or that all my sinuses are fine. He scheduled me for deviated septum surgery in a month and said he wasn't sure it would cure my episodes of sinsusitis. The problem with me is my sleep. I haven't had a good night's sleep in years. I can't breathe. Head is always stuffy, ears too. Always feel spacey and my head always feels swollen, something like sinsusitis makes a lot of sense. I was wondering if the surgery is going to help if I don't really have sinsusitis which one doctor said I had and the other said I don't. Confused.

Well first you have to understand two things. The primary care doctor is only making your diagnosis based off of your feedback and symptoms. He/she does not have any diagnostic info to base the opinion off of...nevertheless, he/she is thinking that there is a more serious underlying reason for your symptoms.

So he moved you on to a specialist for a second opinion. Going to the specialist "IS" a second opinion. Everyone is saying that you need a second opinion....well you already had one. Although, if you are still experiencing the same issues, you might want to go to another physic an, but the specialist consult was your second opinion, just to clear that up. When the specialist took a look at you with the diagnostics, he/she took the primary care doctor's opinion into consideration but with the additional information proved that initial decision to be incorrect based off of the extra test and a specialist opinion.

You would be really surprised to see how many times physic ans disagree with a diagnosis. Although, the additional test and information often prove the immediate thoughts incorrect.

Get a third opinion. Why have surgery if it really isn't required?

I think before I allow any surgery, I would get another opinoin from another ENT physician, especially since your are getting conflicting information. If you can't breathe at night, you might benefit from having a sleep study done and they can then give you options for a better night's sleep.

I would definately get more opinions before you go and get surgery.
I wish i knew more about that to help you.
Call sinus drs ask their opinion
Good Luck
ps I had sinus surgery a few years ago and it was very painful, they also said that it can come back... i had blockage in one sinus.... it did come back.... Id rather use sinus spray every day for the rest of my life than have that surgery again and again and again...
Best Wishes

WOW HON I CAN HONESTLY FEEL WHAT YOUR GOING THREW.TO THINK Y OU CAN TRUST DOCTORS AND THERE JUST SAYING THINGS TO SAY IT.ONE OF THEM IS OBVIOUSLY LYING TO YOU.BUT IF YOU FEEL YOU GOT IT THEN YOU MUST HAVE IT ESPECIALLY WITH YOUR SYMPTOMS AND ALL.I THINK YOU SHOULD GO TO ONE MORE DOCTOR OR TWO AND THEN COME TO Y OUR CONCLUSION BUT PLEASE GET SOME MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR YOUR SYMPTOMS

I would not suggest having surgery before getting another opinion. My husband is a Doctor of Pharmacy and had the same issue before becoming a doctor. His physician recommended he get surgery and so he did. It didn't even help. He had a huge blood clot that developed after surgery and they had to go in and suction if out with some sort of vacuum hose. He said he wished he would have known the cons of the surgery or he would have never had it done.

I guess I would go with the ENT since he is a specialist. A deviated septum can cause breathing problems by interfering with the drainage that normally clears the sinuses. You might try a vaporizer at night to help you breathe better. I use nosedrops that are a saline (salt water) solution. They seem to work better than the expensive ones. You could also have an allergy, and if so, a deviated septum could enhance those symptoms. When all is said and done, and if the surgery doesn't make things better, then I would see an allergist. Good luck!

Go and consult a nasal specialist. It could help, especially if you say its bothered you for years. I know it solved mine problems.
