I have been diagnosed with sinusitis, I am on medication, but really don't need any smart remarks, only very

helpful ones, I have checked the web concerning it, but, would like to know of any other preventive medicines I could purchase, that are very effective and not a waste of money, they have sprays and other different medications, but really would appreciate any caring advice, could anyone please come to my aid?

Oh me, I hate to hear that. I have suffered from Sinusitis for over 20 years..

Make sure you are not around cig smoke, its a bad irritant.
Get some nose spray that is ocean water or you can make your own with some salt and water. Rinse your nose 2x a day. can buy it at Walmart or other stores.
Ask your dr for Nasacort or Flonase, they are cortisone to reduce the swelling in the membranes.
I take Allegra daily as a preventative (per drs request).

If your sinusitis is chronic, go to an ENT (eye, nose and throat dr) so he can see if the sinuses are clogged or if bacteria is trapped in sinus cavities, if they are, he can flush them. It does not hurt to have that done..

On a different note, if sinus infection gets sever and not cleared up by antibiotics, the infection can go to the brain and that can be fatal..
Be sure you keep on top of it with prevention and when you get an infection, go to the dr right away for antibiotics..

Best wishes!

You are most welcome.. Report It

This is not going to be a smart remark :)

Okay, so things that help me!!!!

Humidifiers
Hot showers/steam
Nose Rinses twice daily
Open windows during winter/spring to air out the house!!!!

I have had this before. Take the medication prescribed and it should go away. It took my husband two months to get rid of it. He was on Bactrim DS ( prescription ). Just take the meds the doctor gave you.

prevention: My doctor gave me a spray - Nasanex
My husband takes Claratin D 24 hr. every day..available over the counter with out prescription

Sinusitis really sucks, I suffer from this myself. I take loads of generic sudafed, none of the other medications seem to work for me. The sprays did not really help, and they also made my nose and throat sore. Wish I could have been more helpful.

I suffer from the same condition and have tried everything, including prescription meds. Recently, I found a product called NeilMed Sinus Rinse. It is a wonderful product that you can buy over the counter. The have a web site neilmed.com. I hope this helps you.

I am very sympathetic with you and your situation.
AFter suffering for years, The only things that really helped me was when my Dr. told me about a sinus wash that will kill bacteria.
you need

distilled water
sea salt
liquid chlorophyll and colloidal silver from the health food store.
in a glass mix 1/4 cup water with a pinch of salt and heat to body temperature.
add 5 drops each silver and chlorophyll and mix.
using a large dropper (like one used for infant medication) drop 2 full droppersfull into one side of the nose while laying down.
Turn the head and let it drain out the other nostril. Be sure to have paper towels handy.
The silver kills the bacteria and there are several hundred kind that can live in the sinus cavities and anti biotics don't get rid of them all.
Do this twice a day for a week, mixing up the mixture fresh each time.
Then do it once a week for maintenance.
There is nothing in this that will hurt you, and it cured me.
I do not have to take claritin, or antibiotics anymore.
best wishes

Try out a neti pot. Saw them on Oprah and a couple of my girlfriends have them. They love them. Helps with seasonal allergies too.

I have bad sinus problems to. I take Claritan D that you can buy at the pharmacy now without a prescription. It cost around $18.00 or so for 15 pills. I can not use nose sprays due to they make my head hurt worse so I have no advise on that part. You can have your doctor give you shots to help and it is much more effective than the regular medication. However the shots do contain steroids. There is no medication you can take to prevent from getting it only medication to help it not be so bad.

No smart remarks from me - I have chronic sinusitis and have had surgery several times on my sinus cavities. That stuff is no fun at ALL.I have been prescribed Flonase and have weekly allergy shots.

BUT, the thing that really saves me every day is Aleve Cold and Sinus. Honestly, it is like a WONDER drug. I know the ingredients and I have no idea why it works so much better than ANYTHING else, but it does. It works for 12 hours and it gets rid of all of my sinus pressure - which is what bothers me the most. It also ensures I am not a runny mess all day long - dries my sinuses up, but not too badly.

Next, get some nasal saline spray. I use Ocean nasal saline spray. I only have to use it a few times a day. Some of the other brands burn the inside of my nose and give me horrible headaches - which is why I named the brand. It's the one my doctor always says to get as well. Ayre works really well too but it's more expensive.

I also want to add don't EVER use any of the nasal sprays like Afrin or anything other than just saline solution. I started using Afrin a long time ago when I couldn't afford Flonase that often. It worked for the first few days, but then ALL of my sinus symptoms got so much worse than they ever were before. I had to go to the doctor to get a steriod injected and make the swelling go down. It was AWFUL. I also got a pretty heavy lecture about staying away from that stuff. LOL

Hope this helps - good luck!

You need to get a handle on the cause of the sinusitis in order to know what to do to prevent it. If it is due to your normal environment, you will have to change it in some way or try to minimize its effects. Sinus lavage or rinse, using a saline solution, that you put into one nostril and let it run out of the other (into the sink, of course) can be effective, but don't overuse it. You can buy one of several kits at Walgreens, CVS, Rite-Aid, etc., and even find the recipe for making your own saline solution once the ones in the kit run out.

If it's due to an infection, and you're taking an antibiotic, you are killing all the bacteria in your nose and sinus, so they will start to repopulate the area after you stop the antibiotic. The problem is, it may be the bad bacteria that repopulates faster, and the harmless or good bacteria will lose. So the cycle starts over again. Find a doctor who understands that the aim is to get a balanced, harmelss bacterial population in the sinus and nose, so s/he doesn't treat every infection with antibiotics.

I'm dealing with the same thing right now and I was looking all over the net to find things that would help and nothing UNTILL I bought my first Netti pot nasal rinse,,,Gross I know but 6 days later my problems seem to be getting better.I can breath,I don't smell that horrible smell(whitch I got to indure with my sinus problems). So try that and try to look up you're own sinus rinse stuff.Oh and Grapefruit seed extract. You have to look that up.It does wonders and you won't believe what you read on it.Amazing stuff.

a loved one was recenty diagnosed with severe sinunitis and he had to have antibiotics, however his had develpoed into bronchitis as well.
I dont know if there are any good ways to prevent it, but i can say that the sprays like musinex are good to thin out the mucous---on the other hand do be careful because he ruptured his nasal passage blowing his nose alot from the thinning----one thing that may help prevent it is to use a humidifier every night---this is really good to do when you actually have the sinunitis as well which you may know or found in your research---it will help with the pain.and keeping the sinuses open good luck to you
