Could sudafed tablets cure bacterial sinusitis?

Do they cure it or only relieve the congestion. If it didn't cure it would I have to go the doctor for a prescription, or is there an over the counter remedy?

***Edit: I know I have asked a simliar question but I was afraid I didn't make myself clear enough.***

no. If you take sudafed for too long you will actually make it worse. If it's really bad, with a nasty discharge you really need an antibiotic.

A facial steamer helps a bit, and also helps to keep it at bay once you get rid of it. Also a spray like beconase can help to prevent it.

But if it's acute at the moment, you need to see your doctor

Pseudoephedrine is used to relieve nasal congestion caused by colds, allergies, and hay fever. It is also used to temporarily relieve sinus congestion and pressure. Pseudoephedrine should not be used in children younger than 2 years of age because serious or life-threatening side effects may occur in young children. Pseudoephedrine extended-release tablets should not be used in children younger than 12 years old. Other pseudoephedrine products should be used carefully in children 2-11 years of age. Pseudoephedrine will relieve symptoms but will not treat the cause of the symptoms or speed recovery. Pseudoephedrine is in a class of medications called nasal decongestants. It works by causing narrowing of the blood vessels in the nasal passages.
Sinusitis is inflammation of the paranasal sinuses due to viral, bacterial, or fungal infections or allergic reactions. Symptoms include nasal obstruction and congestion, purulent rhinorrhea, cough, facial pain, malaise, and sometimes fever. Treatment is with antibiotics, such as amoxicillin, penicillin, erythromycin, or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, given for 12 to 14 days for acute sinusitis and for up to 6 wk for chronic sinusitis. Decongestants and application of heat and humidity may help relieve symptoms and improve sinus drainage. Recurrent sinusitis may require surgery to improve sinus drainage.

They are only a temporary relief for sinitus. you cannot take them continuously either. they are cheaper to buy over the counter than through your GP. You should visit your pharmacist for alternative suggestions if you do not want to go to your GP xx I used to take piriton and a nasal inhaler for years then as sudden as the problems started they disappeared with no explanation!! weird!

I have just been prescribed antibiotics for similar and had been taking sudafed. My GP said after a while sudafed make it worse. I have been taking some natural remedies made by Nelson from Holland and barret. They are really good.

Decongestants make some people feel better, but don't seem to make any substantial difference in terms of resolution. For that matter, antibiotics don't seem to make much difference in acute sinusitis, either. It's usually a self-limited illness that resolves on its own and in its own time, though a substantial subset don't clear. Treatment, then, should be directed at control of symptoms.
