Hi I recently had sinusitis operation, as post operative care I'm advised to clean my nose with saline water?

My doctor asked me to clean my nose thrice a day per liter a time. The water is a mix of 3 spoons of salt & half spoon of water. If some one could tell me why I'm asked to do this as post operative care?

to kill bacteria , this will help keep you from getting an infection . the saline is basically Washing out your nose .

Are you certain of those portions? Those just couldn't be right. The usual ratio foe saline is 1/2tsp to 8oz water. Please call your doctor back and ask what the normal ratios should be. Those can't be right. Go to a drugstore and but saline already made and sterile.
Just do this for me. Make a batch of warm tap water, 8 oz and add 1/2 tsp of salt to it. Use that mixture until you can get with your doctor. Please do this. The ratio you mentioned above might hurt you.
God bless.

I've been to that kind of treatment also. Saline water yes. Purposely to clean our nasal cavity. But I think you should review what your doctor advised you to do. Saline water for such purpose should have the proper ratio. At most, it should be like sea water strength only. Too much salt like what you said is very painful to the nose. Lack of salt is also painful. So it must be balanced. Sea water strength is the normal strength required to clean our nasal cavity with no pain at all...

At first, I used the dropper via my nostrils with my face up...And let the saline water flow inside my nasal cavity. I felt relief but not contented. Then I tried using the common plastic straw that we use for sipping our soft drinks. Cut in half. Placed saline water in a drinking glass on a sink or near a sink. In a bowing position sip the solution (with force) via one of my nostril while pressing the other nostril with my thumb so that its close....In an alternate manner. Saline water enters the nasal cavity and goes out through the mouth.Together with mucus. It was very satisfying....Feels very clean inside...

I feel sure your proportions are wrong, buy a product called NeilMed, it's purpose made, you get a special squeezable bottle plus sachets of salt to match the size of the bottle. Easy to use and has full instruction.
It will aid healing and wash out congealed blood, I used it after surgery.

I've read somewhere that using water to wash out the sinuses are to help keep them clean. Take out the dust and extra mucus that may be traped inside. Its also good for people with allergies, ie. pollan and dust
