Do you think that sunsreens help cause skin cancer?

Do you have any proof? I'm concered about the high # of skin cancer patients now adays, it seems like an epedemic of skin cancer has broken out since we started using sunscreen/sunblock.

No.

While some direct sunlight is necessary for Vitamin D production in the body if you will experiencing any prolonged sun exposure sunscreen should be used.

The reason the prevalance of skin cancer is increasing is that skin cancers caused by sun exposure often take very many years to develop after damage from the sun. Therefore the majority of people developing skin cancers, those in the 50+ age group did not use sunscreen when they were younger resulting in damage that can produce cancers later in life.

As years pass by and the older generations are populated by those who have had access to, and have used sunscreen all their lives, the incidence of skin cancers will begin to drop.

Hope that helps.

The problem with sun screens and even sun glasses, is that they block out the sun, which is their intended purpose, but in doing so they prevent your skin from receiving Vitamin D3, which comes from sun light!

Vitamin D3 prevents cancer and a host of other illnesses like arthritis. Vitamin D3, which is the natural form of this vitamin, will be the supplement of the future.

Getting sufficient vitamin D3 is more important than the risk of getting skin cancer - Just be sensible and wear appropriate clothing and forget sunscreen and throw your sun glasses away - its not cool to be vitamin D3 deficient!

I have looked at the latest research at Duke University in regards to this issue. Yes, sunscreens are effective, but the concern is a feeling immunity from the sun because you are wearing sunscreen. This means staying in the sun longer than normal. Also, summer clothing does not effectively block the UV rays.

Once again, it all comes down to using your common sense.

Age also plays a big factor, previous generations including my own did not use sunscreen. The number of skin cancer patients should continue to increase and then decrease in the near future.

Although sunscreens DO protect us from the sun, most often they contain a lot of potentially harmful chemicals as well!! It is important to be educated on ingredients found in personal care products- most sunscreens contain phthalates, parabens, SLS and synthetic fragrances, all of which can irritate sensitive skin. There have also been links between hormonal changes and using chemical products!
If you want to avoid the harmful effects of the sun and also chemicals, I would recommend using an all natural mineral sunscreen. Personally I use TruKid Sunny Days which comes in a lotion and a face stick. It smells good, is SPF 30 and doesn't have any of the bad ingredients you should avoid. I'd recommend it to anyone!

I have often thought this,i never heard of so much cancer in the 70s some but not every other person, and the pills they push at you on the tv,my gosh take this and that pill. I think if everyone went back to drinking juices and water and eating whole foods and vegetables grown in the earth and not manufactured and put in brightly colored boxes with tons of chemicals and preservatives, that we would not see so much cancer and desease and have to take so many of those advertised pills. think about it,before pre packaged microwavable food were there alot of these pills and cancers? How come people get well from desease if they eat a strict VEGAN(all organic vegetables/food)diet for 6 mos?and drink purified water and organic juices.makes yah wonder.

Some sunscreens may not be blocking the type of rays that cause cancer-it is recommended that you use a product with Zinc oxide to block these rays...so I'm guessing you could get a false sense of security by using a sunscreen that is clear for example.

NOT AT ALL. My biologist said that in order to prevent skin cancer you must wear sunscreen. Sun screen prevents the damaging effects of ultraviolet light whcih are thymine dimers.

No.
