Can you get skin cancer in an area that wasnt exposed to the sun?

I went to the beach a few weeks ago and i noticed a bump below my hip. But i dont think it is skin cancer or anything cuz the place where the bump is wasnt exposed to the sun at all. Its a ways below my tan line and I dont wear my bathing suit that low for sure so it defiantly wasnt exposed. I just want to know if it is possible to get skin cancer in an area without sun exposure to determine if i should get it checked out

Im only 14 and i had bathing suit bottoms and board shorts on over where the bump is

You have two questions here . . the first is that yes skin cancer is possible anywhere on the skin . . the sun is a risk factor and not all skin cancer is caused by sun exposure.

However, the second question you bring up is about a bump below your hip . . this probably has nothing at all to do with the sun or sun exposure and is what you should be concerned about. First . . how long have you noticed this bump? What is the size? Does it itch? Is it something you've noticed before . . is it getting any larger? Has it gone away? Do you think it could be a bug bite? Did you bump something and now this is swelling in that area? There are many questions here and because none of us can see this bump . . than you need to be examined by a doctor.

Go to your Mom and ask her what she thinks this bump might be . . she might know . . and if not . .than she will take you to a doctor.

Do not let this bump go for more than a month without medical attention . . if it is growing larger . . insist on seeing a doctor immediately. It is hard to tell from your description what this could be . . but if the bump is under the skin . . and if it is 2cm or larger and growing . . there is a type of cancer called sarcoma that you should know about. A sarcoma strikes teens and young adults and is a cancer of the muscles, fat, tendons, joints, bones, or the soft tissue in the body . . a sarcoma is rare but cancer in teens is rare. It is usually painless and appears as an unexplained lump or bump growing anywhere on the body . . that may be the only warning you get . . especially if it is growing bigger day to day or week to week . . .it should be examined.

Good luck to you . . hopefully this is nothing, but it is good that you are aware of your body and what is and is not normal.

Skin cancer can come up anywhere, especially the black melanoma that is hard to stop. But that's not a lump usually. People often get skin cancer on their scalp, even if they have thickish hair.
On the other hand, sun-caused ones take 15 to 30 years to develop, so you'd know if that is feasible for your age. (Tanning salon ones can come up in a few years in very young people, but the exposure to UV there is hundreds of times stronger than real sunlight).
Skin cancers are often flattish bumps, multi coloured or dark, with ragged edges. Other similar things might be moles or warts, which grow by themselves. This is liklier in a sunless part of your body.
I'd not treat it as an emergency, but keep an eye on it for growth, and show it to your doctor next time you are there for something else.

Yes.

I was diagnosed with melanoma at age 21. I have never tanned, but most people who are diagnosed with melanoma have had some sort of sun exposure issue. However, I got melanoma without ever being in a tanning bed or getting a tan. It was on my neck. I have very long hair, and my neck is very pale. So yes, you can get skin cancer in "protected" areas.

My oncologist said that melanomas don't necessarily show up on body parts that were exposed to the sun.

You don't get skin cancer a few weeks after being out in the sun. Most skin cancers are caused my long time exposure usually quite a few years ago. And some skin cancers not the result of sun. But the sun can penetrate clothing as well. So that spot below your tan line could well be a pre cancerous condition or maybe skin cancer and shoud be looked at by dermatologist. I have been to seminars and such over the years and believe it or not these "skin doctors" have impressed me as much as any speciality. Some can look at a bump and tell you in 10 seconds. Of course you need to get a slice of it to be sure. So go have it checked. Good luck.

It is possible to get skin cancer anywhere, just like you can get a mole anywhere. It's possible the bump is under your skin, not on your skin. I'd have to know more about the bump. If it's under the skin, it may be a lymph node. There are many in the groin area. I'd suggest a trip to the doc. It may be harmless, and it may not be, so get it checked out. :)

Yes, you can, if the fabric covering your skin isn't thick enough. Most modern light and airy summer fabrics that keep us cool don't offer enough protection from the modern sun. I say modern because fabric used to be more dense decades ago and so did the ozone layer.

well she covered as much as i know buy also remember your clothes may have a low SPF rating and you may not get the protection there.

Most clothing only have a sunscreen factor of 5 or below.
