if you go to a tanning salon they will give the recommended strength and time (usually 5-6 minutes at first). they will also show you how to use the bed.

if you're scared of skin cancer, this does not help your risks. but, if you do it in moderation and don't go every day, you'll reduce your risk from getting cancer this way.

Firstly How old are you? I would not reccomend anyone under 18 using a tanning bed.
If you use a tanning bed twice a week, using a good quality tanning lotion such as Swedish Beauty or Australian Gold which you can buy from salons or on the internet the risk of skin cancer in minimal, compared to 2 weeks in the sun with no sunscreen. Start off with a short session, and build it up, build a base tan without burning and you will keep your tan for longer and it will be healthier for your skin, remember the lotion as dry skin reflects light and you will lose up to 70% of your session time. Start off well and it will be great.

I tanned for years off and on and I am only 24 but honestly I can see a drastic difference in my skin because of that decision. As much as I loved the tanned look the permanent spots and blemishes because of it. Please just be careful. I only use tanning lotion now and seriously nobody can tell a difference. It is a bummer to have to re-apply more often and not have the ease of spending 20 minutes a day laying there being warm and getting a tan but a spray tan is great and is a wonderful alternative in terms of keeping your skin healthy and avoiding wrinkles let alone skin cancer.

You will get skin cancer with a large amount of tanning bed usage!!! But if you don't mind the risks the people at the tanning salon will assist you in time and usage of the tanning beds.
If you don't want cancer try using a fake tanner, it looks good (if used properly) and no cancer!!!
Plus think of all the nasty either naked or mostly naked people who have been on the tanning bed before you =P

Get a spray on tan first. Before you do all the tanning beds and what not. You might fine that to be better.
