Would you get skin cancer if you picked at a mole??

i know you can get moles removed but my sister has recently been piking at the mole on her finger i keep telling her to leave it alone but she wont i also read that you could get cancer from picking them please i don't want my sister in hospital

No, but according to a very VERY old school Dermatologist I saw last week (the bow -tie kind!!! who called me 'young lady'!) it's generally not a good idea to pick them, but it will not cause malignancy.

(your on early Dr Frank? Here have a thumbs up)

I'm not sure, but when my sister had to get some moles removed she had scratched them/picked at them before and they thought she might have cancer because the cells looked damaged, but it turns out it was just because she had damaged them from picking at them.

So, probably not. I think your sister will be fine, but tell her not to pick at any bump on her body because it can cause scarring.

Hi,
I don't think you need to worry. Unless she is picking at the mole because it is irregular, scabby, oozing (before she started picking). You cant get cancer from picking at a mole. But, she could get an INFECTION!! MRSA the bad staph infection can get very easily into open wounds. I had it and almost died from a small cut on my hand. She is the only one that can stop this behaviour though. Maybe it is caused by anxiety?

Moles are generally quite harmless; however it is best to leave them alone unless they are being removed surgically, as the constant irritation could trigger off a reaction in the cells.

But you won't get cancer from picking at the mole

I don't think you read that moles undergo malignant change when you pick them. Actually they don't!

No, picking at moles do not cause cancer. That is just a myth.

No You Cant
