Does getting a sunburn increase my chance of getting skin cancer versus getting a tan? |
I know that all UV exposure is bad for the skin, but I was wondering if burns are worse as far as cancer likelihood goes? You actually don't get skin cancer from peeling, you get skin cancer from the tan itself. The chances of the skin cancer appearing is dependant on how bad your skin is damaged, and how much skin needs to be repaired. To get a tan, your body produces melanin to protect itself from the harmful UV rays that you are exposing it to. You are forcing your body to produce mass amounts of melanin, which increases the chance of mutated cells being created, ergo, cancerous cells. Yes, I think so. I burned the other day and started peeling and my grandmother told me, "You need to wear sunscreen! You can get skin cancer from peeling. It's not good for you!" HIH! |
