Should i go to the tanning bed if both my aunts had skin cancer?

they were out in the sun 247 though
btw i wouldnt go everyday i would go just enough to have some color

Please don't! I don't have a family history of skin cancer, and I loved tanning in high school. Not going everyday, but before every major dance and party. I am now 25 and just recently had skin cancer removed from my forehead. It was emotionally the worst thing I've ever been through, physically scarring for life, and financially embarrassing.

I hate being pale, its an awful self conscious charachteristic I've always lived with. Go to your local rite-aid, target and buy a bottle of L' Oreal Sublime Bronze Spray. Exfoliate at night, spray on body and wake up feeling like you got the ultimate spray tan. It's like 9 dollars a bottle and lasts for 3 full body sprays :)

Don't go tanning, its not only awful for your skin, but horrible for your eyes!

DON'T DO IT! Tanning beds are a much higher risk of skin cancer. They eliminate the UVB rays that cause skin to burn which is also the body's warning to you that you are getting to much sun. So you stay in beds longer getting more UVA rays than you would normally. UVA rays penetrate the skin deeper, effecting more cells with possibility of mutating to cancer. Family history of skin cancer is risk factor that you might have higher risk of getting it.

If both your aunts had skin cancer that means that cancer might be in your gene pool. You could be at a higher risk than someone else who's aunts have never had skin cancer. None the less, the sun outside is just as harmful as the rays of a tanning booth. A tanning booth just takes the power of the sun and makes those rays harmful faster. If you are going to tan, try not to do it very often and get screenings for skin cancer regularly and you should be okay.

You've read all the other answers - take their advice. Don't do it.

Haven't you noticed that tanned skin is no longer cool? All those athletes at the Olympics were covered in skincare / anti-sun cream - once tennis stars etc. were always deep tanned - no more.

Coco Chanel started it all ; you can read about it on www.after-cancer.com, and also under find out about fake tan preparations. These are marvellous today, but you need to prepare your skin for an even tan - the website tells you how.

Good luck

If you're going to end up the same colour, then you're going to have been exposed to a similar amount of UV radiation - giving you just as high a skin cancer risk. Tanning beds have no less risk than actual sunlight.

Hello,

I wouldn't but there are some recent studies showing increased risk of melanoma in patients who used tanning beds. If one of your aunts had melanoma, I'd say don't use tanning beds at all.

Best Regards,

John Di Saia MD

Absolutely not. Please don't do it! You already know it runs in your family, so why make your risk even higher??

Use a good spray on tan instead. They make good ones now that don't turn you orange.

It has been proven tanning beds if abused have caused skin problems. I don't know how old you are but long excessive exposure to sun or tanning bed.s might possibly cause skin problems. Please think about it.

you'd be better off getting a spray tan if you want to be tan. That way, you wouldn't look like that disgusting lady from there's something about mary.
