What can cause a mole to suddenly change BESIDES skin cancer?

A longtime mole has suddenly become more raised, darkened and "crusty" feeling. I kind of picked at it (sorry!) and immediately a chunk of black skin fell off and it started bleeding. Melanoma runs in the family but while I wait for a doctor's appointment and test results I'd like to know if there are any benign cell changes that can cause these symptoms.

Oh my goodness!! This is a bad sign, a mole that suddenly begins to grow or change, esp. one that bleeds easily. All are bad signs, and malignant melanoma is a very deadly form of cancer. You had better go to a skin doctor NOW If you cannot get in go to someone else, before it is too late. Source(s): I teach this stuff.
When I was pregnant, I had a few moles do strange things and I had them all checked out. My dermatologist said my hormones were doing crazy things and that it was somewhat normal. So hopefully there is another answer for your moles.....other than cancer!
My sister had some many moles it was unbelievable. She was also very religious. We called her "holy moley"

Get it checked out.
