Why does the White race have a much higher chance of contracting skin cancer? |
Why does the White race have a much higher chance of contracting skin cancer? All forms of cancer result from mutated DNA, which causes the cells to grow in an uncontrolled way, leading to tumors. With skin cancer, this mutation is most commonly caused by UV from the sun, which can damage DNA. The body's natural defense again UV is melanin - the skin pigment which gives you a tan (the reason you get a tan when you go out in the sun is your skin is reacting to the presence of dangerous UV, and is trying to protect itself) Obvioulsy, those of black origin have a lot more melanin, and so have a better 'sheild' against UV (although they can still get skin cancer, it's just less likely). By contrast, white people are very exposed, and so more UV can get through to your DNA, so increasing the chances of developing skin cancer. There is also the social side to consider: in most white cultures, a tan is considered attractive, so many white people will spend a lot of time in the sun, which will increase the risk of getting skin cancer. Source(s): Biology degree. Because they have a much lighter skin which increases their risk of developing the cancer. because they sunburns more easily and have less I forgot the word sorry White skin is sometimes very delicate. Tanning in the sun is just asking for skin cancer. This would especially be true for people with ancesters from Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Scots, Irish, etc. |
