What has tanning done to your skin? Does anyone have any experiences with cancer from tanning? |
I have been an avid tanner for going on 5 years now. I recently stopped tanning b/c well one it's too expensive and two I am becoming scared of getting skin cancer. Has anyone here gotten skin cancer from tanning? Does anyone here feel afraid to tan like I do? Is it really worth the risk of having your skin age? I don't think so. Tanning damages your skin, period- once, twice, 20 times, or 300 times. Every time you're exposing yourself to those types of rays, you're aging and hurting your skin. Period. As far as the cancer thing goes, yes, it's very possible, especially if you have fair skin to begin with. However, although it's better to abstain from it completely, I sometimes go for a month every other day or so and then continue once a week until the sense gets knocked back into me. I do this because I figure once in a while won't kill me- the cancer stories I've read are from fair skinned, cancer susceptible people and also from people who go every day all year (beauty queen in Cosmo issue from a few months ago). I don't know. Why risk it? Just tan naturally in the summer and find some confidence in being pale during the winter and fall- just think of Kate Beckinsale. She's pale and drop dead gorgeous! My mother is ten years older than her sister. Her sister was always tanned, because her husband prefered the look. My mother, on the other hand, always tried to keep her exposure to UV reasonable. Now, my mother looks younger than her (decade-younger) sister, and she has never had a problem with her skin, while her sister has had pre-cancerous moles removed from her skin by a dermatologist on close to a dozen different occasions. My sister tanned and sun-bathed for years and did in fact get skin cancer. She had a great big patch on her back and leg that had to be removed. She does lay out in the sun now but she uses ALOT of sunscreen and she will not use a tanning bed at all. I can't answer from first hand experience....Blonde, fair...I burn and peel...so I stay out of the sun. I have an aunt, however, who was an avid tanner for many years. She is now in her 60's and looks like she is about 80! And YES, it does cause skin cancer...not pretty! Facts are facts....the sun's rays are dangerous if misused. Be VERY careful! i know 2 friends that have passed away because of skin cancer. im 25 so they were very young. i know one was an avid tanner. my ex-gf made me go since im so pale. but i refuse to go at all now. the negatives out-weigh the positives. i seen some self tanners that are really good, they look very natural. i would advise people to use them instead I have never tanned because of the fear of skin cancer. Certain factors may mean that you have an increased risk of developing skin cancer. Severe sunburns, even one, as a child or an adult may drastically increase your chances. Not only does tanning increase your chances of cancer it also completely damages your skin. The UVA and UVB rays from tanning degrade the collagen in your skin, lower your immunity and give you nasty wrinkles. http://www.tansome.com/uv-tan.html... |
