If you pick at your zit, and it scars, can it turn into skin cancer? |
Silly question, but I am curious. I picked a zit on my nose a long time ago..like 5 years ago. it left a red scab. it is smaller than a pencil eraser and never changed in color, size or anything. I had a doc check a while back and she did the ABCD's of skin cancer and said no, it didnt look like it was that...seeing a dermatologist soon, but was curious if that can happen. No. Cancer happens at a cellular level, when cells turn "bad" and take over. Many times it happens intrinsically, but it can also be caused by extrinsic factors such as toxins from tar and smoke (lung cancer) or sun damage (skin cancer). A scar in and of itself will not cause cancer, it's just not the nicest thing to have on your face. So, stop picking! No. Scars do not become cancerous. Sunburn damage may scar, but it is the damage caused by the sunburn, not the scar that potentially could (notice I did not say will) become cancerous. |
